While going through my pre-holiday online meal prep list a question popped into my head: Can I make a safe Holiday Meal option for our Fur-Kiddos?
The quick answer is yes but with some careful considerations.
The AAHA provided a nice guideline for a meal. I’m going to refer to it as my ‘Pet menu’ for the season, kind of like developing a ‘Kid menu’ for the holidays.
Pet Menu – Main course
- Chicken or Turkey, cooked with no seasoning or oils, and deboned & skinless
- Potatoes and carrots, boiled then served bland – no seasoning or butter
- Acorn or Butternut Squash, roasted – no seasoning or butter
Pet Menu – Dessert (choose one)
- Pumpkin Puree, no seasoning or additives (should say 100% pumpkin on can) with a tsp of plain yogurt on top
- Blueberry, Bananas or Apples – chopped up and mixed with some organic oats and plain yogurt
How should I think about portions?
Keep in mind that these foods need to be fed sparingly so you minimize any stomach upset. Think of this as more of a treat vs. meal.
The Preventive Vet recommends serving 1-tsp to 1-tbsp of each item on a plate to ensure you don’t upset their digestion.
And don’t forget to educate yourself with the AAHA “what not to feed” list of human foods for pets to ensure your pet stays safe through the holidays.
